What is Dandruff?

So what is dandruff? Dandruff is characterized by flakiness and itchiness on the scalp. It targets people of different ages and can lead to other skin conditions such as pimples and acne.

So what causes it? There are several reasons why you’re experiencing dandruff. Some of these reasons include seborrheic dermatitis, dry skin, poor hair brushing and shampooing, sensitivity to hair products, and stress to name a few.

Homemade Dandruff Treatments

Now that you have an idea of the condition you’re dealing with and the factors that can cause it, here’s a list of several homemade dandruff treatments you can try.

Baking Soda

If you’re into home remedies, you’ve probably encountered this product before. But did you know that you can also use baking soda to counter dandruff?

Baking soda exfoliates the scalp which is an important process because it helps remove the buildup of flakes. It acts as a scrub without being too harsh on the scalp.

To use baking soda as a treatment for your dandruff, just follow these steps:

  • Step 1. Mix baking soda and water until it creates a paste.
  • Step 2. Part your hair in sections, apply olive oil, and then slather the paste into the sections. Leave this on for 5-10 minutes.
  • Step 3. Rinse your hair thoroughly and make sure that the paste is not there anymore. Try doing this at least twice a week and if it works for you, gauge how many times you will need to do this every week.

Apple Cider Vinegar

If you’re into the topic of skincare, you’ve probably heard of the Aztec Healing Clay Mask which is usually used alongside apple cider vinegar. But we won’t be using it to mix with a mask. Instead, we will be using it as a treatment for your dandruff!

  • Step 1. Mix equal parts of water and apple cider vinegar.
  • Step 2. Apply the mixture on your hair after you wash your hair in the shower.
  • Step 3. Leave it on for 15 minutes before rinsing it thoroughly.

Quick and easy, right?

Garlic

We all want our hair to smell great that’s why we invest in shampoos and conditioners that almost smell like a garden filled with lavenders and roses. But are you willing to trade the smell of gardens for the smell of a garlic clove in order to get rid of your dandruff? We’re guessing you are.

Aside from being a great addition to your food, garlic contains a lot of antifungal properties which can be used to treat dandruff.

To use garlic as a dandruff treatment:

  • Step 1. Pound a clove or two of garlic.
  • Step 2. Mix the pounded garlic with water and honey until it turns into a paste consistency. We’re adding honey to help mask the smell.
  • Step 3. Massage the paste into your scalp.
  • Step 4. Leave it on for 15 minutes before rinsing it thoroughly. Make sure to use shampoo!

Egg Yolk

It seems like we are seeing a pattern here, don’t you think? These food items are cheap, easily accessible, and best of all: easy ingredients for your dandruff treatments! An addition to that list is a commonly used ingredient: the egg yolk. Just like garlic, it contains an ingredient that is great for our hair. Egg yolks contain biotin which is a vitamin that helps treat dandruff.

To use egg yolk as a dandruff treatment:

  • Step 1. Separate the egg white from the egg yolks.
  • Step 2. Before a shower, massage the egg yolk into your scalp.
  • Step 3. Place a cap to seal in the yolk in your hair. Leave this on for an hour.
  • Step 4. Thoroughly rinse your hair and make sure to follow it up with a good smelling shampoo.

If this treatment works for you, don’t get too excited! Remember to only use this at most three times a week.

Coconut Oil and Lemon

Ah, the most famous ingredient for homemade hair treatments: coconut oil. And yes, not only is it great for making your hair shiny but it can also help your flakey situation! To create a great homemade dandruff treatment, we will add in lemon to help in the exfoliation process.

To use coconut oil and lemon as treatments for dandruff:

  • Step 1. Heat 2 tablespoons of coconut oil.
  • Step 2. Mix equal parts of the heated coconut oil and lemon juice.
  • Step 3. Massage your scalp with the mixture. Leave it on for 30 minutes.
  • Step 4. Thoroughly rinse your hair and make sure to follow it up with a good smelling shampoo.

Dandruff can be a really irritating skin and hair condition to have but thankfully, our kitchen items are here to help us! We’re hoping that you will try out these easy treatments soon. Have fun with it and trust the process!
